Description
A lovely old world plant, the Variegated Snowbush, also known as the Snow Rose or Tree of a Thousand Stars, is a small evergreen shrub featuring many, many pink buds that open to starry white flowers over a long period from mid spring through summer and well into fall. It does produce a plethora of flowers but we’re not sure where “Tree” in the common name Tree of a Thousand Stars came from? Perhaps because it’s such a popular bonsai subject that is trained to look like a small tree? This variegated selection shows off attractive, shiny variegated green leaves with white margins.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 2 to 4 feet tall and equally as wide depending on pruning, the Variegated Snowbush is ideal for use as an accent in smaller garden beds or as a compact hedge or in groupings in landscape borders and home foundation plantings. It is extremely popular for bonsai. A fine addition to cottage gardens, old world gardens and white theme gardens.
Spacing Recommendations: 2 feet apart for solid hedges, 5 feet or more apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
The Variegated Snowbush is easy to grow in a consistently moist but well drained soil of moderate fertility in part shade. Morning sun with shade or filtered sun in the afternoon is best. This shrub is evergreen in USDA Zone 9 to 11 and semi-deciduous to deciduous in Zones 7 and 8. This plant responds very well to trimming for hedges or formal shapes and is also a fine candidate for bonsai.
