Description
A perfect sculptural addition to Asian gardens, rock gardens, miniature gardens and containers, and a fine candidate for bonsai, Cryptomeria japonica ‘Tansu’ is a dwarf Japanese Cedar with an interesting and attractive shape that resembles a jagged mountain outline. Adding only 2 to 3 inches in size per year, Tansu takes on a broad pyramidal form that in 10 years might reach 3 to 4 feet in height and 3 feet wide. Branching is clumpy and new growth is a bright light green that contrasts nicely with the darker green mature foliage. In cooler climates the needles will turn an attractive bronzish-orange tones
Note: In cooler climates this plant hould be protected from cold, dry winter wind.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 3 to 4 feet tall and wide at maturity, the Tansu Cryptomeria is ideal for use as a focal point specimen in small landscape spaces and use in minature gardens, Asian theme gardens, rock gardens and conifer gardens. Also nice in pots, planters and other containers and excellent for bonsai
Spacing Recommendations: To enjoy the natural form of this plant we suggest using only as a specimen.
Growing Preferences
Cryptomeria is very easy to grow and virtually no maintenance. It is adaptable to many soil types preferring a fertile, moist but well-drained soil in full sun to part shade. A little shade or filtered sun in the hottest part of the day in the deep South would be appreciated. As with many other ornamental evergreens it does not like a constantly soggy or wet soil, nor an always dry one, though trees have good drought tolerance when well established. We suggest at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day for best performance. Feed in spring with a well-balanced shrub and tree food that contains iron. No pruning will be necessary.
