Description
Named for its numerous golf ball size clusters white, nectar-rich flowers through spring and summer, ‘Snow Day’ Eucalyptus is a new introduction that has demonstrated superior cold and drought tolerance in our Zone 8a Georgia gardens while also being arguably one of the best selections for small properties and gardens. At a height of about 12 to 15 feet tall with an equal spread, there’s no worry about this true dwarf growing out of bounds. Can be grown as a multi or single-trunk small tree and is a fine selection for growing in pots, planters and other containers that can be situated o0n patios, decks and around other outdoor living spaces.
Snow Day has elongated emerald green fragrant leaves that contrast nicely with the red stemmed new growth and the foliage has a gentle weeping habit. The foliage also contrasts well with the silvery-grey new bark, which peels in ribbons exposing a smooth, creamy white underbark.Â
An extremely tough and low maintenance tree that is both drought and frost tolerant, Snow Day Eucalyptus is a fine selection with its compact mature size and adaptability to a range of environments. Â
Cold Hardiness
In McDonough, GA (Zone 8A), 10 month old trees in pots and in ground had zero stress signs after a winter where temperatures reached in the low 20’s.
Landscape Uses
Growing to 12 to 15 feet tall with an equal spread, Snow Day is a slow to moderate grower that will beg to be planted as a focal point in smaller garden spaces. Also useful as an evergreen hedge or screen. Excellent selection for pots, planters and other containers.
Suggested Spacing:Â 8′ for privacy screen;Â 20′ or more for space between trees
Growing Preferences
The Snow Day Eucalyptus isn’t too picky about soil type. It prefers a moist but well-drained soil but is quite tolerant of dry soils when established. It will grow in full sun but also tolerates some shade. It is one of the most cold tolerant Eucalyptus but equally as heat resistant and we’ve seen no problems with insects or disease. Responds well to pruning so size and shape are easy to control. Can be grown as a single or multi trunk tree.
