Description
A landscape architect’s dream plant, Party Lights Osmanthus provides unique and outstanding texture and color found in no other plant. Scientifically known as Osmanthus heterophyllus, it is an evergreen shrub featuring bright pink and white new leaves that are a delightful contrast with the mature, dark green holly-like leaves below. New leaves emerge pink, turn to creamy white and finally to rich green. As with most other tea olives, this one produces fragrant white flowers in fall, though the flowers are not quite as intensely fragrant as Osmanthus fragrans varieties. Growing in an upright, pyramidal for to only 4 to 5 feet tall and 3 to 4 feet wide, Party Lights is a fine selection for smaller garden spaces where larger tea olive won’t fit.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 4 to 5 feet tall and 3 to 4 feet wide, Party Lights Tea Olive is ideal for use as a specimen in smaller garden spaces or in groupings or as a hedge in larger spaces. It makes a fine accent in home foundation plantings. Especially nice near patios and other outdoor living spaces where the fragrance of the flowers and the texture and color can be enjoyed from up close. Also does well in containers that can be situated on patios and decks, and which can be brought indoors during winter above USDA Zone 6a, where it is not cold hardy. A fine addition to fragrance gardens and Asian gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 3 feet apart for hedges; 7 feet for space between plants.
Note: For our customers who live and garden North of USDA Cold Hardiness Zone 6a, where this Osmanthus variety is not reliably winter hardy, you’ll be happy to know it can be grown in containers that can be brought indoors during winter and placed back outside when temperatures warm up in spring.
Growing Preferences
The Party Lights Tea Olive is easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soil of average fertility and full sun to part shade. As with so many ornamental evergreen shrubs, this one does not like wet feet. Constantly soggy or wet soils can be problematic. Maintenance is minimal; requiring little if any pruning. That said, the plant responds well to pruning if a more formal shape is desired. It’s also disease, fungus, and pest resistant.

I received a nice sized, healthy plant. but it doesn’t have new growth yet, to get the pink contrast. Since I need something on the deck, to prevent birds hitting the window, I hope this small tree will work well in a very large pot. The fact that it will have leaves even during the winter makes it even better for a deck plant.——————————————————Hi Diane, Thanks so much for taking the time to provide your review of the Party Lights Pink Flush Tea Olive.
