Description
‘Mariken’ is a dwarf, slow-growing and low-spreading form of the Ginkgo Tree, also called the Maidenhair Tree, one of just a few surviving trees to have inhabited the earth 150 million years ago. It features unique interesting two lobed fan shaped green leaves that in fall turn the brightest golden-yellow of any tree in existence. ‘Mariken’ has somewhat weeping to pendulous branches that might reach only 2 feet tall by 2 feet wide in 10 years, making it a fine selection for growing in containers or as an accent in small garden spaces. All grown up it might reach 3 feet tall by 7 or so feet wide. Very easy-to-grow and extremely long-lived, Mariken is destined to be a conversation piece in the garden…for hundreds of years to come!
Note: All of our Ginkgo trees are males, which means they won’t have the less-than-desirable smelly fruits that smell like gym socks. Needless to say, we always suggest to plant male Ginkgo cultivars!
Landscape & Garden Uses Â
Growing slowly to 2 feet tall and wide over 10 years and maybe 3 feet tall and 7 feet wide at maturity, the Mariken Ginkgo is ideal for growing in containers or as an accent in small garden spaces. When planted near a patio or other outdoors living space it is sure to be a conversation piece!
Suggested Spacing:Â Best as a specimen
Growing Preferences
One of if not the easiest trees to grow, the Ginkgo adapts well to adverse growing conditions in urban areas. It is remarkably free of diseases, is insect resistant, and exceptionally drought tolerant when established. It adapts well to most soil types, even clay, and won’t be bothered by moist or dry soil conditions. Soil pH is of no concern as Ginkgo trees perform well in both acid and alkaline conditions. Avoid pruning other than to remove damaged branches or lower branches to expose more trunk.
Plant Long & Prosper!
