Description
This is the standard topiary tree-form of Lawrence Crocker Daphne, which is a very reliable selection perfect for smaller garden spaces. What it lacks in size it makes up for in flower power! After your Winter Daphne has finished filling the air in your garden with fragrance, you can now extend the sensory appeal from mid to late spring through early summer with Lawrence Crocker’s LOADS of large, intoxicatingly fragrant clusters of bright lavender to lavender-pink flowers that stand out wonderfully against the glossy and dark green leaves.Â
Note: We have this one listed as cold hardy to USDA Zone 6 however we’ve heard that it is quite possibly reliably hardy to zone 5 with winter snow cover and sheltered from northwest winter wind.Â
If you could have only one fragrant shrub in your landscape, Daphne should be your choice!
Landscape & Garden Uses
A cute little fella growing atop a single trunk in a dense, rounded mound to about a foot tall and a little wider, Lawrence Crocker Daphne is ideal for use as a specimen or accent plant in partially shaded smaller landscape spaces and home foundation plantings. Excellent evergreen shrub for use under the canopies of large shade trees. Plant it near windows, patios, decks, porches and other outdoor living spaces where the wonderful fragrance can be enjoyed. A fine addition to Asian gardens, fragrance gardens, cottage gardens, rock gardens, and shade and woodland gardens.
Note:Â Â For our customers who live and garden north of USDA Plant Hardiness Zone 6a, where this hybrid Daphne variety is not reliably winter hardy, you’ll be happy to know it can be grown in containers that can be brought indoors during winter and placed back outside when temperatures warm up in spring. That said, it’s not the easiest plant to grow in containers, much preferring growing in the ground. But hey, with tender loving care it can be done!
Growing Preferences
Despite the remarkable variety of gardening myths about its requirements, Daphne is very hardy and easy to grow when planted right and in the right spot. Daphne prefers shade to part shade. Morning sun is okay but avoid direct afternoon sun. Grows best in rich, sandy-humusy, well-drained but moist soil with a neutral pH (6.5-7.5 pH). Good soil drainage is essential as Daphne do not like constantly soggy soils, which can cause root rot. In heavy clay soil that doesn’t drain well it’s a good idea to plant in raised mound to ensure proper drainage. Daphne are drought tolerant when established however this spring, summer and fall bloomer prefers a consistently moist soil during the bloom season. Dry soil may reduce summer bloom. Make sure to pick the right spot for planting because once established Daphne do not like their roots to be disturbed. Daphnes are often slow to establish and are best left undisturbed once planted.

I ordered this little topiary bush to add to my landscape. The plant arrived healthy and with detailed instructions on the best way to plant it. I particularly like the detailed instructions since my usual planting method would have destroyed the root ball. I’m looking forward to ordering from Wilson Brothers’ extensive on-line selection again.————————————————–We are so glad you are pleased with your purchase! Thanks for the kind words and great review!
