Description
Winner of the prestigious Award of Garden Merit by the Royal Horticulture Society, Royal Purple is the most fragrant and has the darkest purple flowers of all Wisteria. In spring, abundant, downward hanging, 16 to 20 inch long tresses packed with sweetly fragrant violet-purple pea-like flowers provide amazing visual and sensory appeal in the landscape. A long-lived twining vine that wraps itself around posts, trellises, rails and any other structures its vines can twine around, this one can climb or run up to 30 feet or more in length, though can be pruned to control size and spread. With some pruning, it can also be trained as a highly-attractive single or multi trunk tree. The dense green foliage turns to vibrant yellow in the fall.

Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing vigorously to 25 feet or more in height or length, the Royal Purple Wisteria is ideal for use to grow up and over sturdy arbors, pergolas, and other over head structures that might benefit from the support of a flowering vine. Also nice growing along the tops of fences or rails or up tall columns or posts. Can also be trained to form a highly attractive small tree. As it often does in the wild, this wisteria can be grown up and throughout the branches of large trees without compromising the health of the tree. A fine addition to Asian theme gardens, blue or lavender theme gardens and cottage gardens.
Suggested Spacing:Â 10 feet apart to cover a fence
Growing Preferences
Royal Purple Wisteria is adaptable to various soil types and thrives in a wide range of pH (4.5-7). We suggest a moist but well-drained soil of average fertility for fastest growth. The vine is happy in full sun or part shade. Flowering will be diminished in heavy shade. If needed, prune in late winter to reduce the size of an old wisteria. Selective pruning to remove stray branches and for general shaping purposes can be done any time of year.
