Description
Sure to be one of those plants in your landscape that will captivate the attention of all who see it, Eurya japonica ‘Moutiers’ is an intriguing evergreen flowering shrub or small tree belonging to the Pentaphylacaceae plant family.Â
One of the only named varieties of the species, this handsome selection sports attractive, lance-shaped pewter-green leaves with a narrow dark green band around the wavy, serrated leaf margins. The glossy leaves have a thick, learthery quality. In spring, abundant, bell-shaped, cream-white flowers appear under the branches. Young plants appear mounded but as the plant grows its ascending branches begin to form an upright conical to pyramidal shape. Left to grow naturally the plant might attain a height of 6 feet and spread of 4 to 5 feet. That said, it responds well to pruning so can be maintained in a rounded or mounding form if desired. Very cold hardy, Eurya can be found growing in the mountains of Japan at elevations that experience below zero F temperatures. Prefers part shade but will grow in full sun provided there’s a consistently moist but well-drained soil.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Use at the edge of a woodland garden, or the back of a mixed border. May also be pruned to shape.
Naturally growing to about 6 feet tall and 4 to 5 feet wide, Moutiers Eurya can be grown as a shrub or lower branches can be removed to form a very attractive small tree that ideal for use as an eye-catching specimen or groupings in landscape and flowering shrub borders or the edges of a woodland garden. Also useful to frame entryways. A welcome addition to Asian theme gardens and rare plant gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 3 to 4 feet apart for solid hedge; 7 feet or more apart for space between plants.Â
Note:Â For our customers who live and garden north of USDA Plant Hardiness Zone 6a, where Eurya is not reliably winter hardy, you’ll be happy to know it can be grown in containers that can be brought indoors during winter and placed back outside when temperatures warm up in spring.
Growing Preferences
Best grown in moist, humusy, neutral to slightly acidic, well-draining soils in full sun to part shade. Can adapt to many different soil types, including clay. Does not tolerate cold, drying winds during winter. Hardy in Zones 6-10.
Eurya is easy to grow in most any moist but well drained soil of average fertility and full sun to part shade. It prefers a loamy soil rich in organic matter. As with so many other ornamental plants it does not like constantly soggy or wet conditions however does prefer a consistently moist soil to perform its best. Responds well to one or two prunings for shaping, size control and tree forming. Prune as needed immediately after flowering.
