Description
A slow growing but striking specimen in small garden spaces, Chamaecyparis obtusa ‘Nana Gracilis’, commonly known as the Dwarf Hinoki False Cypress, adds about 3 to 4 inches in height per year reaching maybe 6 feet when all grown up. Its slow growth rate and smaller stature make it a fine choice for the smallest of gardens. Its unique texture and rich, delicate, curvy fans of dark green foliage accentuates plants with lighter colored foliage and is especially nice near Japanese maple trees and in Asian and rock gardens. We have found that it will appreciate some filtered sun or shade during the hot midafternoon hours in USDA Zones 7 and 8 but takes the full all day sun further north to Zone 4. We suggest at least 5 hours or more of direct sunlight per day for best fullness and overall performance.
Landscape & Garden Uses
The Dwarf Hinoki Cypress is ideal for use in pots or planted in the ground as an eye-catching focal point specimen in small garden spaces and home foundation plantings. Good drainage is essential in pots. A fine addition to Asian themed gardens, topiary gardens, conifer gardens, and Xeriscape gardens (low water needs).
Growing Preferences
The Dwarf Hinoki Cypress is easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soil of average fertility and full sun to part shade. In hot-summer climates of Zones 7 and 8 we suggest some filtered sun or shade during the hottest afternoon hours. At least 5 hours or more of direct sunlight per day or all-day very lightly filtered sun is suggested. Constantly soggy soil or standing water is problematic. Avoid overwatering. Provide only enough water to keep the soil damp to moist. Established plants growing in the ground are quite drought tolerant and will only require an occasional watering during prolonged periods of drought. Very low maintenance, no pruning is required except to remove a stray branch that is spoiling the shape of the plant or to remove a damaged plant part.
