Description
A honeybee’s dream plant, and the butterflies and hummingbirds too, when there isn’t much blooming in the garden in late summer and early fall, Caryopteris, commonly called Blue Mist Shrub or Bluebeard, is there as a late-season pleaser. But Beekeeper doesn’t only please with its abundant and fluffy cloud-like clusters of nectar-rich blue flowers, it also sports colorful foliage. It is an attractive plant even before it blooms, sporting eye-catching, fragrant golden chartreuse foliage that becomes slightly greener later in the season. Forming a rounded mound to 3 feet tall and equally as wide, Beekeeper is a sensory charmer in smaller garden spaces or large containers, or in groupings or as a colorful low border or hedge in larger spaces. This low-maintenance beauty is tolerant of drought, resistant to pest and disease, and the deer turn their nose up to it in our gardens.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing to 3 feet tall and equally as wide, the Beekeeper Blue Mist Shrub is ideal for use as an accent, in groupings or as a hedge to add pleasing color and texture in garden beds and landscape borders. It is also useful as a solo or combined with other plants in containers that are at least 16 inches in diameter. A fine addition to butterfly and hummingbird gardens, beneficial pollinator gardens, cottage gardens, fragrance gardens, blue theme gardens, and the Xeriscape (low water needs).
Suggested Spacing:Â 2.5 feet apart for solid border or hedge; 6 feet or more apart for space between plants
Cultural Preferences
Blue Mist Shrub is easy to grow in most any moist and loamy but well-drained soils of average fertility and full to mostly sun. It is very drought tolerant when established. Constantly soggy or wet soils can be problematic. It flowers on new growth so is best pruned if necessary in late winter or early spring, which will create more new growth resulting in more flowers. In cold climates below zone 6 the stems might die back to the ground with new growth emerging from the base of the plant in spring.
